Paris reports to jail

After attending last night's MTV Movie Awards, Paris Hilton reported to jail just before midnight to serve her 23-day jail sentence. After surrendering at a downtown Los Angeles men's jail at 11:15 p.m., the socialite was transported to the Century Regional Detention Facility in Lynwood and booked at 11:38 p.m. Hilton was described as "cooperative during the [booking] process, which included being fingerprinted, photographed [and] medically screened," according to a statement from the sheriff's department. After surrendering her personal property, Hilton was issued a booking number, wristband, an orange top and pants and personal hygiene items and escorted to her cell at around 1 a.m. "Ms. Hilton will be housed in a cell by herself and will be segregated, in a special housing unit, from the general population during her stay at CRDF," said the statement. Hilton's lawyer confirmed in a press release that his client had "turned herself in" to begin her sentence, and the heiress issued a statement: "I am ready to face the consequences of violating probation. During the past few weeks I have had a lot of time to think and have come to realize I made some mistakes. This is an important point in my life and I need to take responsibility for my actions. In the future, I plan on taking more of an active role in the decisions I make. I want to thank my family, friends and fans for their continued support. Although I am scared, I am ready to begin my jail sentence." Hilton will spend nearly 23 hours a day in her 12-by-8 foot cell, leaving only for an hour of recreation and to meet with her attorney or to attend classes.
