The Simple Life has officially been canceled, according to a source at the E! network. Overexposure is reportedly to blame for the end of Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie's "reality" show. "We felt like the real life drama of their lives overshadowed anything happening on the show," says the insider. "Viewers would see Paris all day long on the news about her going to jail, so they didn't care about seeing her camping with kids. It just was too played out." Richie also became difficult to work with, adds the source: "Paris carried the show. She was the one willing to do anything. Nicole was the diva."
Producers are expected to announce the casting of Paris Hilton in Repo! The Genetic Opera, rock opera/horror film that will begin shooting in September. The futuristic flick, which is completely sung, chronicles an organ failure epidemic in 2056 that forces people to perfect genetically perfect organs from a biotech company. "The idea is that everybody is buying up organs, and they cannot afford to pay for these organs," the film's director told MTV. "Thus, legalized organ repo-men come into the picture. Murder becomes sanctioned by law. So, if you buy a heart and can't afford it, someone can burst through the door and take your heart out...and they don't get in trouble for it." I'm not sure what makes this flick a horror - the plot or the fact that Paris Hilton has a singing role. On Tuesday night, the heiress did not reveal specifics but did admit to being in rehearsals for a "very cool and unique project." "We're just in the studio," she said. "We're doing dance and singing."
Well...her neighbors must be happy. Paris Hilton has listed her Hollywood Hills home on the market for $4.25 million. Last month, the media frenzy surrounding Hilton's release and subsequent return to jail uncovered obvious privacy issues for the heiress. According to her aunt and informal spokesperson, Hilton is looking to buy a larger home in a gated community or one with a long gated driveway. The socialite bought the 3,000 square foot house for $2.9 million in 2004. Hilton's aunt said that although her niece does feel sympathy her neighbors and how her presence has affected them, they were not a factor in her decision to sell. The heiress is currently staying in a rental in Malibu.
Paris Hilton isn't holding to her word about turning her life around and using her fame for good. In her post-prison interview, the heiress said she had plans to do charity work for breast cancer or MS and to open a "Paris Hilton playhouse" for sick children, but since her release she seems to only be up to her old tricks: shopping, dating, and living the good life. Hilton told E! Online this week, "I'm already working on my new record" and that she has been collaborating "for a few weeks" with producer Scott Storch. She also seems to have new beau, 21-year-old Australian clothing entrepreneur Tyler Atkins. The two were spotted snuggling at a beach party on Saturday, where the socialite snapped up thousands of dollars worth of free jewelry. Yesterday, Hilton embarked on a mega shopping spree, picking up a new surfboard, boogie board, pet toys and beds and photography books. Unless she's giving all that stuff away to charity...looks like business as usual for Hilton.
Nothing seems to have changed with Paris Hilton, despite her post-jail reassurances of her intentions to lead a better life. The socialite is back from Hawaii to prepare for her Fourth of July party in Malibu, but tried to use her quick vacation to show the public that she could relax without wild parties. Fellow vacationers in Maui, however, tell a different tale. "Paris tried to check into the Four Seasons first, but they turned her down," said a hotel guest. "She then tried to stay at the Fairmont Kea Lani, but they turned her down as well. She finally got a place at the Grand Wailea Resort, but that's because it was a Hilton. We all thought it was hilarious that the Hilton hotel was her third choice." Another source said, "The paparazzi told us that Paris calls them herself," and said a photog told him, "'We love her. She lets us know where she's going to be so we can take as many pictures as we want.'" At night, the heiress reportedly couldn't resist the draw of a local nightclub. "She slipped out of the hotel and went to the club at the Hyatt a couple of times," said another source. "She made friends with a couple of local guys and made out with them there. I guess she didn't want pictures of herself doing that... It's amazing. She hasn't changed at all." Whether or not any of this is true, it seems obvious that Hilton calls the paparazzi to let them know where she'll be. Who takes a vacation and invites a pile of stinky cameramen? Only Paris.
I know we're all insanely sick of Paris Hilton, but it's a pretty slow news day so far... The recently-freed jailbird spoke to People mag yesterday at her grandfather's Bel Air mansion just hours after her release. "Thank God I'm free!" she said. "Just being able to hug my mom felt so great, and I really needed it cause I haven't had a hug in a long time." The heiress gave a candid interview about her stay in prison:
Look out, neighbors - Paris Hilton has been released from jail. Hilton walked out of prison shortly after midnight this morning, escorted by deputies and waving to a large crowd of photographers and fans. Met by her parents, Hilton said, "Mom!" as she hugged Kathy Hilton in a waiting Cadillac Escalade. Check out the live footage below. The heiress first reported for jail on June 3 after being sentenced to 45 days on May 4 for driving with a suspended license, but her sentence was reduced as a result of good behavior. After a few days, Hilton was reassigned to house arrest but ordered back to jail after one day. After a visit this weekend with her daughter, Kathy Hilton told reporters, "I think she's very, very excited to see the family." Hilton will make her give her first official interview tomorrow night on Larry King Live.
After NBC's Today show cancelled their planned post-prison interview with Paris Hilton amid rumors they were going to pay the socialite $1 million, Hilton announced that she will instead sit down with Larry King. Hilton will appear in studio for a full hour, and released a statement reading: "I am thrilled that Larry King has asked me to appear on his program to discuss my experience in jail, what I have learned, how I have grown and anything else he wants to talk about. Larry King is not only a world-renown journalist, but a true American icon. It will be an honor to do his show." (Sounds like King himself wrote it, doesn't it?) Meanwhile, more details from the socialite's prison phone conversation with Ryan Seacrest for E! News have been released. Hilton told the Idol host of her plans to build a "transitional home" to help women just released from jail. "These women just keep coming back because they have no place to go," she says, adding that the home will be "a place to get food and clothes on their backs."
Paris Hilton may want to turn over a new life, but she has yet to curb her appetite for media attention. The socialite took a break from staring at the walls to call E! News's Ryan Seacrest, and says she has come to appreciate "things I took for granted" and from now on hopes to use her fame "in a good way." "I'm so much more grateful for everything that I have, even just to have a pillow at night or food," Hilton said in a phone interview. "You know my gratitude has gone up so much and I just realize that the media used me to make fun of and be mean about it. Frankly [I'm] sick of it and I want to use my fame in a good way." Of her stay in jail, the heiress said, "I am behind glass and I want to give my dad a big hug and they won't even let me do that. That's how the rules are, you have to be behind glass. I'm not a criminal, I'm not dangerous, so it makes me feel like that. It's hard but I'm stronger every day... I just can't wait to see my family and have a nice meal and be in my own bed and appreciate all the things I took for granted and never really thought much about."
NBC has reportedly agreed to pay $1 million for Paris Hilton to give her first post-prison interview on the Today show. According to insiders, Hilton will sit down with Meredith Vieira the day after her release from jail next week. ABC is said to be infuriated, after banking on Hilton spilling all to Barbara Walters, who has become a close friend of Hilton's mom, Kathy. NBC Universal head Jeff Zucker called the socialite's father Rick personally to make the pitch. The heiress will speak only to Vieira due to "disparaging" remarks about her made by show co-host Matt Lauer. Hilton's rep said he "can't confirm or deny" the story.
Neighbors of Paris Hilton are dreading her release from prison, calling the media frenzy around her Hollywood home "intolerable" and fearing the "circus" that will resume next week. A spokesperson for an LA councilman says his office received more than 50 complaints from residents during Hilton's one day of house arrest. "Most concerned noise from the five helicopters that handled the live coverage of her one day at home," said the rep. "Other issues involved overcrowding and space issues, because the street is very narrow, doesn't have sidewalks and has no parking." In a letter circulating Hilton's neighborhood, a couple of residents urged residents to contact their city councilor, saying, "Since the arrival of Paris Hilton to our neighborhood we have seen our quality of life deteriorate."
Paris Hilton gave her dad a homemade (well, prison-made) Father's Day card yesterday during her parents' visit at the Century Regional Detention Center. When asked on his way into the facility whether he had had a hard Father's Day, Rick Hilton replied, "It's not ideally my best." After a 45-minute visit, the socialite's mom told reporters that Paris is "doing well, she's doing very well. She's doing much better. She made [Rick] a beautiful Father's Day card with his picture." When asked how her daughter is spending her time in prison, Kathy Hilton quipped, "She looks at the four walls, and reads nice fan mail." The heiress also visited with sister Nicky, her boyfriend David Katzenberg and longtime friend Julie Araskog over the weekend.
Ellen Degeneres has weighed in on Paris Hilton's recent confession to Barbara Walters that she "used to act dumb." The recent Emmy award winner says, "She's not getting anywhere doing that... If that really is an act, if she really was playing dumb, then what does that say about our society that we're celebrating someone who was successful because they're not smart? I just think it's a bad sign and she shouldn't contribute to that. It's just amazing if that was an act the whole time." Degeneres has invited the heiress to appear on her show after she has completed her jail sentence, saying, "Hopefully, she means what she says. I hope she is reading good books and I hope she comes out and changes her life a little because she needed to."
Paris Hilton was transferred back to the Century Regional Detention Facility in Lynwood last night, where she served the first three days of her sentence last week. A Sheriff's Department spokesperson confirmed that Hilton's "medical condition is stable. She was moved last night at 10:55," and described the transfer as "a step down" in terms of the facility's amenities. The spokesperson alluded that the heiress suffers from "various psychological and psychiatric issues" and would be monitored, but gave no further detail as to the specific nature of her problems.
During the night Paris Hilton spent under house arrest last week, she was reportedly visited by a plastic surgeon. At 4 a.m. last Friday, paparazzi agency x17 spotted a man leaving Hilton's Hollywood home, who confirmed to a cameraman that he was Hilton's doctor. The same man was spotted later that day outside the socialite's ill-fated court hearing. Turns out the man is Dr. Steven Hoefflin, a cosmetic surgeon with the moniker of "plastic surgeon to the stars," who has done work on Michael Jackson, Sylvester Stallone, Joan Rivers, Elizabeth Taylor and Janet Jackson. A source close to the Hiltons says Dr. Hoefflin is the hotel family's private doctor, who consults with them on medical issues - including cosmetic enhancements.
It was another busy day for reporters covering the Paris Hilton saga, with the news that she has been dumped by her agent and a prison visit from parents Rick and Kathy. The Hiltons spent about half an hour with their daughter through visiting room glass. "It's tough in there. It's cold," Kathy Hilton told reporters on her way out. "It's just good to see her. She was very happy. She wants to just do her time and get on with it. She really hasn't had much sleep," Mrs. Hilton added, in addition to losing her appetite. According to a source, the heiress was dropped by her talent agent at Endeavor agency, who told People mag, "Paris is no longer a client," but did not provide specifics. After being repped by the agency for two years, her split from the group was reportedly announced in a company-wide email.
