Slumdog Millionaire bags 8 Oscars; India celebrates






It was the day of the Slumdog at the Oscars!

Out of the ten Oscars that it was nominated for, Slumdog Millionaire swept eight Oscars, which included two Oscars for music maestro A R Rahman, Best Director for Danny Boyle and Best Sound Mixing for India's Resul Pookutty.

The film opened its Oscar account by winning in the Best Adapted Screenplay category for Simon Beaufoy.

After that, there was no looking back as the film went on a dream run to win awards in Film Editing for Chris Dickens, Best Cinematography for Anthony Dod Mantle and Sound Mixing for India's Resul Pookutty.

36-year-old Resul Pookutty created history by becoming the first Indian to bag the Oscar for Best Sound mixing. Pookutty shared the Oscar with Ian Tapp and Richard Pryke for their collaborative work for the film

"This is unbelievable. I share this stage with two magicians...I dedicate this award to my country," Pookutty said while accepting the award.

The biggest success for India came with a double Oscar treat for Rahman for Best Original Music Score and Best song
(Jai Ho).

The composer was overwhelmed and interspersed his speech with Hindi as well as Tamil on receiving the coveted trophy here Sunday.

"There is a dialogue from an old Hindifilm - "Mere paas ma hai" - which means I have nothing but a mother. My mother is here, I have her blessings. I am glad she could be here," said Rahman.

He ended the acceptance speech by saying "God is great" in Tamil, something he says after winning every award.

He shared the second Oscar for best original song for the film's theme number Jai Ho with noted Indian lyricist Gulzar.

"All my life I had a choice between hate and love . I chose love and I am here," said Rahman after receiving his second golden statuette.

British filmmaker Danny Boyle won the Best Director award. Boyle was visibly excited and overwhelmed as he said "I want to thank my dad, my sisters and my wife... one person we haven't thanked is the choreographer who directed the last song in the film - Longines. I want to thank him too," said Boyle after receiving the award.

The film also won an Oscar for Best Motion Picture. The announcement for Best Picture saw a jubilant cast and crew of the film, celebrating together on the stage.

A R Rahman at Oscars


After becoming the first Indian to win the Golden Globe, Allah Rakha Rahman added yet another feather in his cap blazing a new trail getting a triple Oscar nomination in two categories, an unprecedented feat for any Indian.

The 43-year-old music wizard, nicknamed 'Mozart of Madras', who has enthralled audience in the country and abroad with his heartwarming symphonies finally got his due recognition on the international stage with his composition in the movie Slumdog Millionaire.

Rahman, born in Chennai on January 6, 1966, was nominated in the Best Original Score and Best Original Song categories for two of his compositions -- Jai Ho and O Saya.

The film has been nominated in the following categories: Achievement in Cinematography - Anthony Dod Mantle, Achievement in Direction - Danny Boyle, Achievement in Film Editing - Chris Dickens, Achievement in Music (Original Score) - A R Rahman, Achievement in Music (Original Song) (Two Nominations) - A R Rahman, Best Motion Picture - Christian Colson, Achievement in Sound Editing - Tom Sayers, Achievement in Sound Mixing - Ian Tapp, Richard Pryke, Resul Pookutty and Adapted Screenplay - Simon Beaufoy.

What made Rahman's music click with the listeners was the refreshing use of percussions, sound and melody, most of which were inspired from Indian folk music.

Mumbai Terrorist Attack:Operation 'Black Tornado' at Nariman House over, Nsg takes control


Breaking News! Operation 'Black Tornado' at the Nariman House, Mumbai is finally over. The operation lasted for more than 46 hours. Five hostages were killed in the gunfire, while the NSG commandos gunned down two terrorists. Both terrorists were killed on the fourth floor of Nariman House.

According to NSG DG GK Dutta, the NSG has now taken control of Nariman House. The NSG commandos searched every room and corner of the house for any possible terrorist or explosives and then handed it over to Mumbai Police.

Nariman House was the hub of the terrorists, as they stayed here for some days and planned their attack. The terrorists had also bought provisions (including 100 kg chicken and dry fruits) worth Rs. 50,000 from the local market near Nariman House. The terrorists had held some Israeli citizens as hostage. One NSG commando Havaldar Gajender Singh was killed in the battle, while another one was injured. The gun battle at Taj Hotel is still going on.

The arrested terrorist Abu Ismaili revealed that they had come from Karachi in a ship belonging to a gulf country. While some terrorists stayed in Nariman House, others has checked in at Taj and Trident Oberoi hotel four days ago. They stored huge quantity of arms and ammunition in Taj Hotel. The interrogation is still on.
