Pandeglang Police say that dozens of Ahmadiyah sect members coming from Jakarta have triggered the deadly fight between the sect members and Muslim locals at the Cikeusik, Pandeglang, Banten on Sunday morning.
Pandeglang Police chief Adj. Sr. Comr. Alex Fauzy Rasyad said that two cars bringing in around 20 “Ahmadiyah members from Jakarta” had refused to leave the village and provoked the locals.
“We [Police] have asked them [the Ahmadiyah followers] to leave but they refused. They said that they would fight until the last blood should police fail to protect them,” said Alex as quoted by MetroTV.
Alex said that the tension between the two groups had heightened since Saturday when the locals mobbed the house suspected to become a place of worship for the Ahmadiyah followers. The house owner, Suparman, and some of his family members were taken to the Pandeglang police post for questioning on Saturday.
The tension heated up on Sunday morning after the Ahmadiyah followers from Jakarta came in two vans at 6:30 a.m. and provoked the locals.
The fight broke out at 10 a.m..
According to Alex, three people were confirmed dead, all from the Ahmadiyah side, while at least nine others were injured in the brawl.
Alex said that the situation had returned normal.
“We have dispersed the locals and placed police line around the attacked house,” Alex said.
“At least two companies from the military command and the police have been deployed to uphold security in the neighborhood,” he said.
