Are Nicole Richie and Joel Madden engaged? After a late performance last night with Good Charlotte in Arlington, Va., Madden was walking offstage when a radio deejay announced to the crowd, "He got engaged yesterday! Congratulations, Joel!" Madden quickly glanced back over his shoulder but was otherwise unresponsive. "We heard this morning," the radio host told People mag. Saying he got the news from "good sources," the deejay said he'd offered congrats to Madden earlier in the night. "He said, 'Thank you so much.' They're very excited about the baby and the wedding. They want to keep their personal life personal."

Nicole Richie knows how rumors get started, so she's nipping in the bud any chance of wicked whispers about her boyfriend Joel Madden being on the outs. Wednesday night, Madden went to celebrate the first anniversary of the Village Pourhouse on Third Avenue, and all was well until a party promoter wanted to take a picture of him with a cute young woman. According the the NY Post, "He said he couldn't, as Nicole gave him strict orders not to take pictures with other celebrities or girls for rumor purposes."
At an event last night in West Hollywood, Paris Hilton spoke of longtime friend Nicole Richie's pregnancy, saying, "She's really happy. I just got off the phone with her. She's so excited. I know she's going to be the best mom ever." Of Richie's relationship with Good Charlotte rocker Joel Madden, Hilton added, "They're really in love."

Part two of the Nicole Richie/Diane Sawyer interview aired this morning, with Richie answering questions about her rumored eating disorder and party girl image. "Do I eat is kind of an understatement," said Richie. "I eat all the time, especially now. I'm constantly hungry. I'm eating at least every hour... Just like any mother, you know, you want to take the best care of yourself, especially while you're pregnant. And I'm definitely eating healthier now, and I'm really playing by the rules. I do not drink caffeine at all, cut out sushi." And to Sawyer's questions about drugs: "No alcohol... No marijuana... No pills... Nothing... No smoking around me." Sawyer also asked whether Richie felt any responsibility for the impression that skeletal images of the star might have on young girls. "I'm really sorry for not accepting that earlier," Richie said. "It took me a while." When looking at pics of her skinny self, Richie replied, "I see a girl that is obviously going through something and is much too skinny... No, I do not have an eating disorder. I've never had an eating disorder. Ever... It's anxiety. It's stress. It's just not being careful." As to whether her size was drug related, Richie admitted, "I think it possibly could have been."
Nicole Richie will serve her four-day jail sentence at a spot familiar to Paris Hilton - the Century Regional Detention Facility in Lynwood, CA. "[Richie's] attorney contacted us and indicated she wants to do her time there," a spokesperson for the LA County Sheriff's Department said today. The rep said no date was given for Richie's surrender, and it was not yet known whether the pregnant star would be housed in the jail's medical ward. "That's all determined by our medical staff upon her arrival," he added.
Nicole Richie has her pregnancy and boyfriend Joel Madden to thank for helping her see the bad pattern of behavior she'd established. Richie admits to dodging responsibility since she was young, telling Diane Sawyer, "It's been a pattern in my life - when I get in trouble, I try to get out of it, since I was little. I really wasn't learning anything from that. So I kept making bad decision or mistake after mistake after mistake. And I wasn't growing. I wasn't going anywhere." Of her December 12 arrest for DUI, Richie admits to smoking pot and taking Vicodin and says she was lost in an unfamiliar suburb of LA. "I was in such shock that I just stopped the car, and in two seconds, police were there and we got off the freeway," she says. "I had smoked marijuana that night. Just marijuana. I had Vicodin in my system from that day, which I take for pain." Richie said she took Vicodin for bad menstrual cramps, but didn't think it would affect her driving. When asked if she still takes it, Richie said, "No. I don't take anything now." Of her guilty plea last Friday, the tiny star said she and Madden had been watching a news segment about drunken driving when she realized the seriousness of what she'd done. "I owe this baby my life. I owe this baby everything and I have a responsibility now," she said of her nearly four-month pregnancy. "Besides being responsible for myself, I'm now responsible for someone else. And I have to set the right examples. I have to really be someone that I would want my child to look up to." Richie took five pregnancy tests but says she didn't truly believe she was pregnant until she heard the heartbeat. She and Madden say they are going to try to "hold out" until it is birth to find out the sex of the baby.
Nicole Richie has finally confirmed pregnancy rumors in an interview with Diane Sawyer to air on Good Morning America on Thursday and Friday of this week, as well as on 20/20 on Friday night. "Yes, I am. We are. I'm almost four months," Richie tells Sawyer, with boyfriend Joel Madden at her side. The diminutive star also speaks candidly about why young Hollywood are so badly behaved, her arrest and upcoming jail time, and how she thinks her actions might have affected young girls who look up to her. "I have a responsibility and it's something that I did wrong, and if I could personally apologize to every single person that has lost a loved one from drunk driving I would," Richie says. "And unfortunately I can't, but this is my way of paying my dues and taking responsibility and being an adult."
The Simple Life has officially been canceled, according to a source at the E! network. Overexposure is reportedly to blame for the end of Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie's "reality" show. "We felt like the real life drama of their lives overshadowed anything happening on the show," says the insider. "Viewers would see Paris all day long on the news about her going to jail, so they didn't care about seeing her camping with kids. It just was too played out." Richie also became difficult to work with, adds the source: "Paris carried the show. She was the one willing to do anything. Nicole was the diva."
Nicole Richie appeared in court in Glendale, California, this morning to face charges of DUI stemming from her December 2006 arrest. The diminutive star, wearing a loose-fitting black dress, pleaded guilty and was sentenced to four days in jail. She also agreed to serve three years probation, must enroll in an alcohol education program and was fined $2.048. "Someone could've gotten killed," the court commissioner scolded during the hearing. "You need to understand that driving under the influence is extremely dangerous." The Simple Life star has been given the option of serving her sentence in a paid city jail, which is seen as less rigid than a county facility. Her jail time must be completed before September 28.

Nicole Richie will reportedly appear in court Friday and is expected to plead either guilty or no contest in her DUI case. Richie will be sentenced at the appearance, and will likely receive a minimum of five days in jail, which is mandatory for anyone with two DUI convictions.
Nicole Richie will finally speak publicly about her upcoming court date and (hopefully) her rumored pregnancy with boyfriend Joel Madden in an interview with Diane Sawyer. The interview is set to air in three segments on Good Morning America on August 2nd and 3rd and 20/20 also on the 3rd. The usually ubiquitous star has been keeping a low profile of late, accompanying Madden on his tour with Good Charlotte and hiding behind pillows and sunglasses in airports.

Nicole Richie's trial date - previously set for yesterday in LA - has been officially delayed until August 16. After a meeting with a lawyer for the reportedly pregnant star, an LA County Commissioner granted a request for a continuance based on the fact that the defense's expert witness would be unable to make it to court before then. "He can speak to the lack of reliability of urinalysis testing," says Richie's lawyer. "He is crucial to her defense. If he is believed, and I believe he will be, then Richie will be acquitted." The commissioner left strict instructions for Richie to appear in court herself in August.

Nicole Richie's lawyer was in court in LA this morning to request a trial postponement. Richie's DUI trial is set for tomorrow, but her lawyer filed a motion requesting a continuance until August 5. Her reasoning? The defense's expert witness, a nationally recognized expert on drug testing, is reportedly unable to testify until the August date. Richie herself was not in court, but was seen boarding a plane to Calgary, Canada, where boyfriend Joel Madden has a gig tonight.
Nicole Richie's famous dad spoke to reporters on Saturday night about the pregnancy rumors surrounding his daughter. "Grandpa, man, that's wild," the singer just before taking the stage in New Orleans. "I don't know if I'm going to be grandpa, I don't know if I'm ready to be called grandpa." Making light of the situation, he added, "Nicole, baby, call me!" Richie said Nicole is "living her life under a microscope, but it's the kind of life you live at that age." He added that he thinks his daughter is "fabulous. She keeps apologizing [for being in the news so much], I tell you, she's doing exactly what you're supposed to do...she's living her life. If we had cell phones, MySpace, internet back then, God knows what my parents would have known about The Commodores."
Us magazine has joined in the reports that Nicole Richie is pregnant with boyfriend Joel Madden's child. The weekly mag says it has confirmed via multiple sources that Richie, 25, is more than 12 weeks pregnant. "She is extremely excited right now," says a source close to Richie. Richie's mom and several friends including Mischa Barton have known about the pregnancy since early May. The source also says Madden has recently been shopping for an engagement ring. Madden's older brother Josh told Us, "Nicole is awesome. I would love for them to get married!" Both families are said to be thrilled about the baby. "Everyone's happy, everyone's good, everyone's getting along," said a source.
TMZ is reporting that they have "independently confirmed" that Nicole Richie is pregnant. "Rumors have been swirling for months that Richie and Madden are expecting, but TMZ has confirmed through several sources that she is, in fact, with child," says the site. Richie has been dating Hilary's Duff's ex Joel Madden for six months, and is set to face trial on July 11 on DUI charges. Her rep has not commented. I'm still not buying it - how could her body possibly sustain a pregnancy?
Nicole Richie spoke to Nylon mag about her celebrity, past drug use and whether she's a role model (though she didn't address rumors she is pregnant with boyfriend Joel Madden's child). A few highlights:
On her celebrity status: "I don't have a clue why I'm famous. I didn't make myself famous... You're doing it. I think people just want to say, 'Oh, she doesn't have a job she doesn't do anything.' They get off on that. But I do have a job, like everyone else."
Oh her past drug use: "When I pictured heroin, I pictured some crazy crackhead with no shoes under a bridge. You never think that is going to be you. And it never was me. I was never under a bridge, and I always had shoes."
On being a role model: "I don't walk around pretending that I'm perfect, so I don't think anyone should hold me to that. The dangerous thing is that there are 16, 17, 18 year olds that people consider to be role models. I'm so happy I wasn't famous back then. You'd think I was the f***ing devil."
Nicole Richie's lawyer appeared in court today to announce that the Simple Life star hopes to beat her DUI charges. Richie confessed to smoking pot and taking Vicodin before her arrest last December for driving the wrong way on an LA freeway. With a prior DUI, the skinny starlet faces a minimum of 5 days in jail if convicted. A trial date was set for July 11.
Nicole Richie got tongues wagging the other night when they showed up at the YSL Pool Party with Joel Madden on her arm and a giant diamond ring on her finger. "It was one big rock surrounded by more diamonds," a source said. Richie refused to talk about the ring, and Madden was "overly attentive to her - keeping his arm around her all night - and repeatedly asked her if she was okay."
Random gossip:- Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen celebrated their twenty-first birthday with a quiet party at the Chateau Marmont. "There weren't really any celebs there - just the two of them and about ten of their friends. Everyone was drinking champage." says a source.
- Lindsay Lohan may be sprung from rehab sooner than you think. "She's scheduled to be out of rehab by next week," says a source. "She's taken rehab very seriously. She has cut a lot of negative influences in her life. She and [her mom] Dina speak every day."
- Mandy Moore hasn't forgiven former beau Wilmer Valderrama for dishing on her losing her virginity to him. "That's not a fun thing to have said about you," Moore told Blender mag. "Even now when I think about it, I'm like, ugh. It's pretty tacky."
- Nicole Richie has kept quiet about recent pregnancy rumors, but a reported friend of the reality show star says she's definitely knocked up. "Nicole is kind of hoping her pregnancy will keep her out of jail," said the insider. Her rep didn't return calls.
