With its elliptical structure, understated characters, and rarefied atmosphere, Polytechnique, an elegantly made black-and-white film about a grisly school massacre from Incendies director Denis Villeneuve, will surely provoke comparisons to Gus Van Sant's Elephant. But Villeneuve's film manages to be less about surfaces and more about people, a lament for the lost human potential in the wake of this unspeakable act of madness.
