What began last year as a cri de coeur against the jazz-is-dead grumblers has grown into the Walt Whitman of New York festivals: a celebration of multitudes. Featuring 50-plus bands, including alto saxophonist Andrew D'Angelo's brash big band, trombonist Josh Roseman's eccentric quartet Joshua 3, Bad Plus drummer Dave King's anthem-jazz side-project, avant-garde hero Darius Jones's trio, and the fiery free-jazz inflected quartet Tarbaby, the Undead takes place over four nights in Greenwich Village, Williamsburg, and Gowanus, encompassing musical scenes from the established to the up-and-coming. It should leave no doubt that jazz is, in fact, alive and well.
