Glam Slam: Top Five Summer Style Trends

June 7, 2011

I am finally getting to wear all of the warm weather clothes I’ve bought over the past few months that have just been sitting in my closet waiting for Summer to get here. Yay!

If you are just starting… or still putting together your Summer wardrobe, here are five trends to try, courtesy of the wonderful Erin Keala Benke, a personal stylist at the Los Angeles Nordstrom at The Grove.

WATER COLORED DENIM
Bust out the paint brushes because you are going to be inspired with this Summer’s haute hues including orange, fuchsia and red! (like Sarah Jessica Parker, pictured) There are multiple ways to sport this colored denim trend—either by pairing it with a neutral color or for the fashion risk takers color blocking it with another hot color! Try pairing a red pair by Current Elliott with a beige blazer for a casual day at the office, then change into a sparkly black spaghetti strap tank top for a night out with the girls!

ALL ABOUT STRIPES
Stripes are showing up in all shapes and sizes this Summer! From the runways of Marc Jacobs, Prada and Isabel Marant, stripes can be both flirty and sporty! (check out Eva Longoria!) Pair a vertical striped top with a pair of Hudson wide leg denim for a nautical look or rock a maxi dress in graduated stripes to show off your ‘70s spirit. This season, more is more! For a bold look, pair a striped top with a striped skirt or for the less daring tone down a striped sweater with a neutral colored pant or denim.

STYLISH STRUCTURED SATCHELS
This Summer it’s all about structured satchels in clean and minimalistic shapes. Having undergone a bit of a feminine transformation, the cross body satchel is perfect for carrying your lipstick, keys and cash for a quick trip to the grocery store. Or try a square shaped shoulder bag by Chloe that comes with long, adjustable handles in a burgundy color for a preppy look. The key to this trend is versatility: a neutral colored satchel is going to be more practical for the office, however, a satchel with an animal print finish is the perfect accessory for a night out on the town.

FEATHER FLAIR
Feathers were all over the runways this season including those of Alexander McQueen, Chanel and Oscar de la Renta adding decadence to hemlines, cap sleeve tops and juxtaposed against other materials such as suede and leather. Of course, this trend doesn’t “fly” with everyone and there are many other ways of incorporating this fluffy trend into your wardrobe. Pair feather earrings with some cutoff denim shorts and a white tee for a hippie look or add flirty feather detailing to your strappy stilettos.

PURRFECT KITTEN HEELS
Give your precious feet a break from your skyline high stilettos and rock these lower heeled classy kicks! With just the right amount of height, kitten heels (named so because the heel resembles a kitten claw) still retain the glamour provided by their five-inch cousins by giving you the perfect long and lean silhouette. Dress them up for the office with a pencil skirt or rock them with your favorite pair of wide leg denim. Kitten heels come in a variety of styles, including the slingback, sandal and even kitten heel booties for Fall!
